Psoriasis is an inflammatory disorder, “autoimmune” in nature, characterized by discrete, red or violet colored scaly plaques, frequently occurring on the knees and elbows, but may also involve scalp, legs, lower back, buttocks, genital region, and nails. Involvement of the hands and feet can be quite debilitating. In addition, patients may suffer from associated arthritis. Other conditions may occur in association with psoriasis. The treatment armamentarium for psoriasis has exploded over the last 20 years, including options taken by mouth, such as Otzela® and Sotyktu, and injectables such as Taltz®, Cosentyx®, Enbrel®, Humira®, Tremfya® and Skyrizi® among others. New steroid free creams include VTama and Zoryve. Because Psoriasis is now considered a systemic disorder, it is imperative to see a Psoriasis specialist/Dermatologist for your condition. A multidisciplinary approach may be necessary as well.
