Winter Itch

You are here: Home / Services & Procedures / Common Skin Conditions / Winter Itch

Have you noticed your skin is particularly dry lately? Winter in Northeast Ohio has been particularly challenging this year. The excessively cold temperatures, coupled with the need to have the furnace on frequently, is the perfect recipe for dry skin. This can lead to itching and rashy skin. Combat this annoying condition by bathing instead of showering. Try putting in two cups of Epsom salts in the water to help soften the skin. Moisturize with creams such as Cerave cream, Cetaphil cream, Aveeno Eczema Therapy, Eucerin Eczema Therapy, or Gold Bond moisturizers, preferably twice a day. Likewise, make sure to wear gloves or mittens when the temperature is cold. It takes very little time for the skin to dry out if exposed to extremely cold temperatures. Drink plenty of water and if possible, consider using a humidifier or a cool mist vaporizer during the winter months.
